Pole Dancing FAQs

Pole Dancing

What Should I Wear?

Of all the Pole Dancing FAQs, this has got to be the most common! So we must say it again - in a good, reputable Pole Dancing class you definitely won’t be required to strip off or prance about in a tiny sequined bikini!

But what should you wear to get the most from your class?

As you are going to be gripping onto the pole with your inner thighs, it’s best and safest to wear a comfortable pair of shorts, so it’s your skin that’s in direct contact with the pole, which will help you from slipping.

Apart from that, normal workout wear is fine - tee-shirts and vests etc. Generally you’ll probably find that you do the class in bare feet, although some people prefer to wear ordinary sneakers. So no special shoes or socks are required.

In fact, there shouldn’t need to be any financial outlay for workout wear for these classes - you should easily be able to find all the requisite clothing in your closet already.

** TIP**

Although you’ll practice the dancing in shorts and a tee-shirt, take some extra layers with you into the studio.

This is because in well run classes, there are generally only about two poles for people to practice on. This is so the instructors can keep a very close eye on what you are doing on the pole. But it does mean that while you are waiting your turn, you can get a little chilly.

You will (or should!) have warmed up properly at the beginning of your class, but you may then find yourself standing around a little. So make sure you keep your muscles warm by putting on some jogging pants and a sweatshirt, and keep stretching during your time away from the pole. You might also want to put on a nice thick pair of socks to keep those ankles warm!

And now to the second of the most common Pole Dancing FAQs...

Will it be suitable for me?

Well, most people can learn how to Pole Dance at a well-taught class, but before you trot off to your local one, here’s a few things to consider.

Many places that teach ordinary Pole Dancing classes also now offer Pole Dancing Parties - for hen nights, birthday parties and so on. These are just for fun and for the party-goers to try out the pole in a relaxed atmosphere.

It’s probably not going to be a full-on lesson with a thorough warm-up and cool down, but rather a more informal chance to try out a single move or two, usually accompanied by peals of laughter from your friends. It’s great fun and a good laugh and anybody of any age, shape, height or size can have a go.

In the ordinary classes though, you’ll be taught several moves which will build into a short routine.

Now, cleaver teachers will choreograph the routine to include some work that uses the pole while you are standing or even sitting on the floor, but at least some of the moves are inevitably ‘up the pole’!

How will you fare with pulling up your own body weight using just your arms? A good instructor is going to help you, but it is hard work.

Of course, the great benefit is that after just a few lessons, you will notice a great improvement in the tone of your upper arms - a much hated area and one that a lot of dances don’t address.

So, if your arms aren’t used to doing much heavy lifting, they’re going to ache a bit after your first lesson, but persevere - it’s well worth the fitness benefits.

And lastly, do please bear in mind that generally, most Pole Dancing classes are open to those aged 18 and over.
